Casa del Sassogrosso

10-12 Vicolo del Sassogrosso (“Lane of the Big Rock”) is a recently restored home in the centro storico (historic town center) of Sarteano, a lovely medieval walled Tuscan hill town of about 4500 people, located in southern Siena province about 20 minutes from Montepulciano.

This area is uniquely beautiful and varied: nearby, the visitor can enjoy classic vistas of vine and olive covered hillsides, large tracts of land given to the cultivation of sunflowers and grains, the wooded mountainside of Monte Amiata (with skiing in winter).  The nearby towns of Pienza, Montepulciano, Montalcino, Cortona (to name but a few) are full of glorious art and architecture.  Rome (or Perugia) is but an hour and a quarter by fast train from the station in Chiusi (20 minutes from Sarteano); Florence and Siena are both a bit over an hour and a half by train.

For walkers, the surroundings of Sarteano offer ample short or longer rambles along “strade bianche,” the small quiet country lanes that connect the old town with the outlying fields and olive groves. Etruscan tombs; medieval castles and monasteries; world-class vineyards: these and much more are within easy reach of Sarteano. We offer detailed information to make your time spent in the area most enjoyable.
