- Take the Autostrada (A 1; also called the E
35) to the Chiusi/Chianciano exit (next exit going north after “Fabro”;
next exit going south after “Val di Chiana”
- Follow signs directing you LEFT toward “SARTEANO”;
follow the road uphill through olive groves
- At an intersection just before you come into town
(the Piazza della Liberta) bear right onto the Via San
Giovanni Bosco

- Go straight ahead through the old stone arch (the
Porta Umbra) and up the steep little hill with the church of San
Martino on your right
- At the top (Piazza San Martino), make a sharp
left, and go through another stone arch
- Stay to the right at the fork, following the
signs to the “(Ex-) Convento di S. Chiara” (do not be confused at
the next little intersection, where a walking-only shortcut to Santa
Chiara goes right)
- Always bearing to the right, follow the narrow road
(Via del Castello) steeply uphill to a little piazza (“Chiesina”),
where you make a HAIRPIN right turn
- Pass through the very narrow archway and
follow the road for a few hundred feet, passing a little courtyard on your
right, until you see a small “Vicolo”, or stepped walkway, descending
also on your right. This is VICOLO del SASSOGROSSO.
- Stop your car. Put on your flashers. Take out
your heavy bags, and descend Vicolo del Sassogrosso a
few steps until you see No. 10-12, the second and third doors on
your left. You are home.
- The designated driver should then proceed along the
road, NOT taking the first right, but continuing past the Convent of
Santa Chiara, then taking VERY SLOWLY a SHARP downhill right turn on
the “Costa Santa Chiara” and back down to Piazza San Martino,
where, if you are lucky, you will find an open parking spot.
Otherwise…
- Follow the blue signs/white arrows slowly
through town and out the Porta Monalda. You can park in the
angle parking there and walk back though town, or take a left onto the
Via di Fuori and park in the Piazza Ippocrate on your right
or just outside the walls of the city at the Piazza Bargagli on the
left (see map of Sarteano)
